Re-imagining Public Goods Workshop

Joffa M. Applegate (SCAS), Sha Xin Wei (SCAS, GAME), and Andrew Dana Hudson (English) convened a workshop with activists, systems theorists, and writers to explore commons-based scenarios through the lenses of food, shelter, and material goods.  We used as a conceptual trellis a “social activity canvas” dimensioned along market vs. value for social production or what would be considered higher-order personal and social “externalities” by economists.   The workshop should yield insights for (1) hybridizing ethnographically-hinted participatory design with unconventional economic theory, (2) designs for speculative alter-economic games.  The workshop was funded by the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics and hosted at the Center for Science and the Imagination at ASU.
